Unseen Sustainability: The Impact of Making Small Changes in Your Packaging

When people think about sustainability, they often picture big initiatives: solar panels, electric vehicles, or large-scale recycling programs. But in reality, sustainability is often built through much smaller decisions—choices that happen behind the scenes, everyday.
For independent food businesses, one of those choices is packaging.
At first glance, a paper bag or satchel may seem insignificant. It's something customers use for a few minutes before taking their pastries home. Yet when multiplied across hundreds or thousands of transactions, the impact becomes meaningful.
This is why, at LIT Bakehouse, we've become increasingly intentional about the materials we use.

Over the past years, we've worked closely with Sinarmas Asia Pulp & Paper (APP Group) through their Foopak and Enza product lines, which support many of the paper packaging solutions used throughout our bakery.
Our satchel bags are produced using Foopak's Greaseproof paper, while our takeaway paper bags utilize Enza MF paper. Both are made from virgin pulp and are designed specifically for food and packaging applications – making it food grade and food safe. The best quality paper material that's providing the strength, cleanliness, and reliability required for daily use in a bakery environment. Quality matters more than many people realize.
A well-made paper bag doesn't simply carry products from point A to point B. It protects delicate pastries, withstands oils and moisture, and reduces the likelihood of tearing or needing replacement. Better materials create a better customer experience while helping ensure packaging performs as intended throughout its lifecycle.
For us, sustainability is not only about replacing one material with another. It's about choosing packaging that is fit for purpose, responsibly produced, and durable enough to avoid unnecessary waste.
These decisions may not be the most visible part of what we do. Customers often remember the croissant, the coffee, or the cake long before they remember the bag it came in.
And that's perfectly fine :-)

The most meaningful changes are often the ones that happen behind the scenes. As a small bakery, we understand that we won't change the world through a single initiative. But we believe that every responsible choice—whether in sourcing ingredients, reducing waste, or selecting better packaging materials—contributes to something larger.
Sustainability isn't always a dramatic transformation. Sometimes, it's simply daily conscious choices.
And sometimes, small changes repeated every day can create an impact far greater than we imagine.
